Parking woes can cause frustration and inconvenience, in this blog we showcase how a well-designed gravel driveway can not only enhance the aesthetics of your property but also prove to be a practical and low-maintenance parking solution. In this case study you can see the power of this seemingly humble feature, providing invaluable insight and inspiration for your home’s parking area.

Follow the journey taken by MGM Landscaping to produce a gravel driveway that provides both an aesthetically pleasing and functional parking area for their client by reading on:

About The Project

Mike’s client was looking for an unused and unkempt grassed area to be transformed into an attractive, convenient, low-maintenance and long-lasting parking space at their home.

Mike and his team proposed the idea of creating a large gravel parking space with the use of large wooden sleepers as a border edging. To ensure they achieved all of the wishes of the client, a high-quality gravel grid was required which would be strong enough to support the weight of multiple vehicles, have a long working life and prevent gravel migration.

Thankfully, MGM Landscaping opted for X-Grid which provided everything they required and more.

X-Grid

X-Grid is a market-leading gravel grid system, manufactured right here in the UK from entirely recycled plastic waste. Suitable for a whole host of applications from gravel driveways to access routes to equestrian areas to golf course pathways – the possibilities are truly endless with X-Grid!

The versatility of X-Grid is only possible due to the wide range of superb benefits it possesses which include; being environmentally friendly, strong (able to hold up to 420 tonnes per sqm), fully permeable, weatherproof, migration-free and rot-resistant.

Creating The Gravel Driveway

The project began with a large excavation task to remove and level off the existing grass and soil area which could then be prepared before creating the driveway.

Next, a stunning sleeper wall was installed on the back and sides of the area to hold the remaining soil back. The natural timber appearance created the perfect contrast against the pre-chosen gravel finish.

With the retaining walls installed, the driveway sub-base could now be prepared.

X-Grid And Wooden Sleeper Walls Installed

The team began the build-up by laying a sheet of membrane and fixing it in place before covering the area using MOT type 1 and compacting well. The sub-surface was then completed with grano dust which is a versatile product used that can be used for a wide range of project sub-bases.

Onto the completed sub-base, X-Grid could now be installed. The installation process of X-Grid is incredibly simple thanks to its integral slot and peg connection system and being a lightweight product, when tested one person is able to lay up to 100m² in just one hour. The team started in one corner of the driveway and laid 9 panels at a time, simply connecting each neighbouring grid pieces together using the previously mentioned connection system. The laying of X-Grid took MGM no time at all and they could quickly move on to filling the grids with their chosen gravel.

To complete the surface, the team filled X-Grid with 10mm basalt gravel to create an attractive and similarly coloured surface to the surrounding area.

Conclusion

Mike at MGM and his client were delighted with the outcome of their gravel driveway installation.

“X-Grid is an excellent quality product which is very easy to install too. The use of your gravel grid prevents the 10mm basalt gravel from migrating when installed!”

Thank you to MGM for choosing X-Grid to complete their driveway project and sharing the photos with us, the new parking space looks amazing!
