21ft x 15ft Log Cabin Base Under A Dunster House Log Cabin

This case study is courtesy Tony who was searching for a suitable foundation for his new Dunster House Log Cabin. Once he had ordered his log cabin he began thinking about a base. He wanted a base that was strong, not too expensive, simple to install and would help protect his log cabin from rotting. Liquids that do not drain away can be absorbed by a wooden shed or log cabin and lead to rotting which will immensely reduce its life span.

Read on to see what base Tony decided to use:

Tony began searching online for a suitable foundation that would be easy to install and support his very large log cabin whilst allowing any water to drain away from his cabin naturally. His search led him to our website and to our strong, permeable, easy to install and fully recycled plastic base.

After reading up on our bases benefits including the ones mentioned and more, Tony ordered a 10ft x 10ft Plastic Shed Base, a 10ft x 8ft Plastic Shed Base along with 2 Shed Base Membranes. His order was dispatched on the Monday and was delivered to his home on Wednesday via pallet.

Tony began his installation by measuring out his 21ft x 15ft area and marking this out with string, from here he began to remove the existing ground to depth of a few centimetres. With the area now excavated, Tony used wooden planks to create a border around the edge of the area to ensure the base and gravel would not move at all once they were installed.

Secondly, Tony laid a small layer of gravel before compacting and levelling it down as well as he could without the use of a wacker plate. A good sub-base supports our plastic base and allows it to perform to its optimum capacity.

Once the gravel was level, Tony rolled out his sheets of membrane and cut to size over the top of the gravel and secured it to the floor using U-Pins to ensure it would not be moved or blown away before the base could be installed on top. Membranes allow water to drain away whilst acting as a shield and stopping weeds from growing up and through the base and reaching your garden building.

Now was time for Tony to install his new log cabin base. The base arrived in m² sections so he could lay his large area very quickly. He started in one corner and laid his base one section at a time, connecting each neighbouring panel together as he went along which is very easy to do thanks to it specially designed slot and peg system. Tony repeated this procedure until his entire base was laid.

Finally, with the base completed, Tony now had to build his log cabin. He started with the flooring and built the support structures on top of the base before starting to erect the walls as well as the doorway and window frames. With walls completed, Tony started working on the roof, he put in the support beams at the top of his log cabin before installing the roof panels. His final job was to put in place his windows and door before painting the exterior before beginning to enjoy his log cabin! Although listing the process may make it sound easy, it is a difficult job and Tony did very well to build his shed.
